The 12 Days Central Bhutan Motorcycle Journey follows Bhutan’s mountain highway from the western valleys into historic Trongsa and sacred Bumthang.

Cross changing elevations, deep forests and high passes while riding through Punakha, Phobjikha and some of the kingdom’s most dramatic central landscapes.

In Bumthang, explore ancient temples, traditional settlements and the beautiful Ura Valley before beginning the scenic return journey to Paro.

Your Central Bhutan Riding Itinerary

Riding routes, stopping points and daily distances may be adjusted according to weather, road conditions, rider ability and local operational requirements.

RIDING ROUTE Paro → Thimphu → Punakha → Phobjikha → Trongsa → Bumthang → Ura → Phobjikha → Paro
DAY 01 Arrival in Paro and Rider Briefing +
Meet your Evara Travel team at Paro International Airport. Complete the motorcycle introduction, safety briefing and equipment check before a familiarisation ride where conditions permit.
DAY 02 Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike +
Hike through pine forest to Taktsang Monastery, dramatically positioned above Paro Valley. This non-riding day also allows additional time to adjust before the overland route.
DAY 03 Ride from Paro to Thimphu +
Begin the motorcycle journey through the Paro and Wang Chhu river valleys. After reaching Thimphu, visit the Buddha Dordenma and selected cultural landmarks.
DAY 04 Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula +
Ride the winding road to Dochula Pass and visit its 108 memorial chortens. Descend through changing vegetation into the warmer Punakha Valley.
DAY 05 Ride from Punakha to Phobjikha +
Visit Punakha Dzong before riding into the mountains toward Phobjikha. Arrive in the glacial valley and explore Gangtey Monastery and nearby villages.
DAY 06 Phobjikha to Trongsa +
Follow forested mountain roads toward central Bhutan. Arrive in Trongsa and visit the historic dzong or museum, depending on the day’s riding conditions.
DAY 07 Trongsa to Bumthang +
Ride across Yotong La and descend into Bumthang. Pass forests, villages and high mountain scenery before arriving in Bhutan’s spiritual heartland.
DAY 08 Bumthang Valley Cultural Ride +
Ride between Bumthang’s sacred sites and rural settlements. Visit ancient temples and enjoy a more relaxed day exploring the valley’s cultural landscapes.
DAY 09 Ride to Ura Valley +
Ride across mountain landscapes toward Ura, one of Bumthang’s most traditional valleys. Explore the village before returning to Bumthang.
DAY 10 Bumthang to Phobjikha +
Begin the westward journey through Trongsa and across the central mountains. Continue to Phobjikha for an overnight stop in the peaceful valley.
DAY 11 Phobjikha to Paro +
Complete the overland ride through Punakha, Dochula and Thimphu before returning to Paro. Regular rest stops will be arranged during this longer riding day.
DAY 12 Departure from Paro +
Transfer to Paro International Airport with assistance from your guide and depart Bhutan after an unforgettable motorcycle journey across its western and central regions.

Essential Rider Information

Valid Licence

Riders must hold a valid motorcycle licence and any internationally recognised permit required for the tour.

Advanced Experience

Riders should be comfortable with long days, repeated mountain bends, steep gradients and changing surfaces.

Protective Equipment

A certified helmet, protective jacket, gloves, trousers and appropriate riding boots are strongly recommended.

Long Riding Days

Central Bhutan involves substantial distances. Regular rest, meal and photography stops will be arranged.

Mountain Weather

Conditions can change quickly. Waterproof riding gear and warm layers should be carried every day.
