Trek from Bumdra to Tiger’s Nest

This eight-day journey combines the cultural landmarks of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha with one of Bhutan’s most rewarding short trekking experiences.

From Sangchoekhor Buddhist College, climb through peaceful forests and open mountain meadows toward Bumdra, meaning “Rock of One Hundred Thousand Footprints.” Camp beneath its sacred monastery with expansive views across the Himalayas.

The following day, descend through rhododendron and pine forest to approach Tiger’s Nest from above—a perspective experienced by relatively few visitors.

DAY 02 Discover Thimphu Cultural sightseeing and acclimatisation +

DAY 03 Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass Approximately 2.5–3 hours driving +

Cross Dochula Pass, where 108 memorial chortens stand against a backdrop of Himalayan peaks on clear days. Continue into the warmer Punakha Valley.

DAY 04 Punakha to Paro Approximately 4–5 hours driving +

DAY 05 Paro Cultural Tour and Trek Preparation Acclimatisation and equipment review +

Explore selected landmarks in Paro Valley while preparing for the Bumdra trek. Your guide will review the trail, equipment and expected conditions.

DAY 06 Sangchoekhor to Bumdra Camp Approximately 4–5 hours trekking +

Drive to Sangchoekhor Buddhist College and begin the trek through pine and rhododendron forest. The trail gradually rises toward open ridges with views across Paro Valley.

Reach the campsite below Bumdra Monastery and spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding ridge or relaxing at camp.

DAY 07 Bumdra to Tiger’s Nest and Paro Approximately 5–7 hours trekking +

Wake to the peaceful mountain landscape before descending through forests toward the temples situated above Tiger’s Nest.

Approach Taktsang from above, visit the monastery’s sacred temples and continue descending to the trailhead, where your vehicle will be waiting.

Preparing for the Bumdra Trek

The trekking section is short but includes sustained climbing, mountain weather and elevations approaching 4,000 metres.

Fitness

Travellers should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours and descending on uneven forest trails.

Proper acclimatisation, a gradual walking pace and regular hydration are important throughout the trek.

Camping

Spend one night in a supported mountain camp near Bumdra, with meals and camp arrangements handled by the team.

Trail Conditions

The route includes forest paths, mountain meadows, sustained climbs and a long descent toward Tiger’s Nest.

Spring and autumn usually provide the most suitable trail conditions, clear views and stable weather.
