THE JOURNEY

Journey to the Foot of a Sacred Mountain

Rising along Bhutan’s northern border, Mount Jomolhari is deeply sacred to local communities and one of the kingdom’s most recognisable Himalayan peaks.

The trek follows the Paro Chu through Jigme Dorji National Park, passing traditional farmhouses, dense forests, mountain streams and remote settlements before reaching Jangothang.

At base camp, spend a full day acclimatising and exploring beneath the immense faces of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake before retracing the river trail toward Paro.

DAY 01 Arrival in Paro Welcome and acclimatisation +

Arrive at Paro International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Spend the remainder of the day resting and adjusting to Bhutan’s elevation.

DAY 02 Tiger’s Nest Acclimatisation Hike Approximately 4–6 hours +

Hike through pine forest to Taktsang Monastery, dramatically positioned on a cliff above Paro Valley. The hike provides valuable preparation for the trek.

DAY 03 Paro to Sharna Zampa Approximately 5–6 hours trekking +

Drive to the trailhead near Drugyel and begin walking north along the Paro Chu. Pass cultivated fields, traditional farmhouses and small settlements.

DAY 04 Sharna Zampa to Thangthangka Approximately 7–8 hours trekking +

Follow the Paro Chu through dense forest within Jigme Dorji National Park. The route includes repeated ascents and descents as the valley gradually narrows.

DAY 05 Thangthangka to Jangothang Base Camp Approximately 5–6 hours trekking +

Continue through a wider highland valley as Jomolhari becomes increasingly prominent. Pass seasonal yak pastures and traditional highland settlements.

Reach Jangothang Base Camp, beautifully positioned below Jomolhari and Jichu Drake.

DAY 06 Jangothang Exploration and Acclimatisation Flexible base-camp hiking day +

Spend a second night at Jangothang to acclimatise and explore the surrounding mountains. Your guide will select a suitable hike according to weather and fitness.

DAY 07 Jangothang to Thangthangka Approximately 5–6 hours trekking +

Leave Jangothang and retrace the river valley toward Thangthangka. Enjoy a different perspective of the mountain scenery while descending gradually.

DAY 08 Thangthangka to Sharna Zampa Approximately 7–8 hours trekking +

Continue downstream through the protected forest, crossing streams and following the Paro Chu toward the lower valley.

DAY 09 Sharna Zampa to Paro Approximately 4–5 hours trekking +

Complete the final trekking section through farms and villages before meeting your vehicle for the return transfer to Paro.

Preparing for the Jomolhari Trek

This high-altitude journey requires suitable fitness, dependable equipment and preparation for remote conditions.

Fitness

Strong cardiovascular fitness is recommended. Prepare with regular hiking, stair climbing and long walks.

Altitude

The itinerary includes multiple nights above 3,500 metres. Hydration and gradual acclimatisation are essential.

Camping

Trekking accommodation is in supported tented camps prepared and managed by the local trekking team.

Weather

Expect cold nights, strong sun, wind, rain and possible snow, even during the primary trekking seasons.

Recommended Season

Spring and autumn usually offer more favourable trail conditions and clearer views of Jomolhari.
